Terry Kinum

Born September 3, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri. Moved to Richmond, VA in 1965 and graduated from Douglas Freeman High School in 1960. Graduate of University of Richmond with B.S. Degree in Marketing, 1964. United States Navy Officer from 1964 to 1971. Returned to Richmond to pursue a career in business. Retired from Pump and Equipment Co., Inc. in 2001. Sobriety date is June 22, 1982. Has been very active and committed to service work in recovery to include five years as a co-facilitator for after care at St, John’s Treatment Center and some nine years in service work with the Virginia Department of Corrections and other penal facilities. Personal interests include golf and fishing as well as being a long term supporter of University of Richmond athletics, serving several terms on the Spider Club Board of Directors. Married to the former Donna Jean Ligon of Dallas, Texas and residing in Richmond.

Wayne was born January 3, 1955 in Newport News, VA. Having completed four years of college Wayne is a career salesman. He is currently employed as an outside sales rep for Euclid Chemical Co., serving VA, MD, and WV.

Wayne is an active Board Member of SAARA (Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance) of Virginia.

He is married to Audry and currently resides in Richmond. Wayne has successful long term recovery for over 13 years.

Daniel was born December 19, 1977. He was born and raised in the Hanover Courthouse area of Hanover County. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1999. He is the Executive Director of The McShin Foundation. He also is the owner and operator of, Widespread Solutions, LLC, a full service company specializing in home and property maintenance.

Daniel is a member of SAARA, Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance. In 2005, Daniel received Hanover County Ruritan’s Community Service Award for his work in the county relating to substance use disorder recovery. In 2006, Daniel received Caron’s Community Leadership Award for his development of the McShin Foundation’s recovery home service model. A program that employees those who are new to recovery or fresh out of prison with a safe work environment. This model was developed to serve the newcomer with early financial stability and also serve as a funding flow for the foundation. The model benefits all, the home/business owner, the addict seeking recovery, and the foundation. Daniel has been featured in The Richmond Times Dispatch (Metro section), The Mechanicsville Local, The Community Observer (Chesterfield), The Virginia Associations of Community Service Boards 2005 Annual Report, and The USA Today (Life Section).

Mr. Payne is married to the former Cara McKenzie Cockey of Richmond. They reside in Hanover with their son Jack. Mr. Payne has over 4 years of successful recovery.

Currently, John Shinholser serves as President of The McShin Foundation, founded in 2004 and named for its two recovering co-founders, John Shinholser and Carol McDaid. Shinholser and McDaid have dedicated their lives to helping individuals and families in or seeking recovery from the disease of addiction. McShin Foundation operates on the founders’ belief that by helping others find and sustain recovery, they can better sustain their own recovery. Shinholser and McDaid decided to establish a non-profit recovery community resource foundation based on this belief and on the work Shinholser had been engaged in with individuals in the recovering community in the Richmond area for over 24 years. John is a United States Marine Corps Veteran. He owned and managed a successful contracting business for over 30 years, during which time he served as President of the Richmond Chapter of the Painting and Decorating Contractors Association and twice recognized as national award winning Original Design Faux Finisher commemorating the quality of his work. John Shinholser currently serves as President of the SAARA of Central Virginia Affiliate President and board member of SAARA of Virginia. Shinholser also serves on the board of Rubicon, Inc., Virginia’s most comprehensive substance abuse treatment facility (230 beds). In 2005, Shinholser received the prestigious America Honors Recovery Award from the Johnson Institute- one of six recognized (nationally) who have been affected or afflicted by alcohol and other drug addictions, and have given back to their communities so that future generations may know the possibility and power of recovery. In 2005 he also received, along with his wife Carol McDaid, the Caron Foundation’s Outstanding Alumni Award. In 2006, Shinholser received the coveted OSAS Award of Virginia for Significant Contributions to the Field of substance use disorder recovery. This award is typically given to professionals in the field. Mr. Shinholser was the first recovering community member to receive this award. John Shinholser has been featured in Addiction Professional Magazine, The Richmond Times Dispatch (Flair, Metro, and Business sections), The Mechanicsville Local, Richmond Free Press, and Virginia Association of Community Service Boards 2005 Annual Report. John currently resides in Hanover with his wife Carol and his daughter Mary Paige. He has over 24 years of successful long term recovery.

John Rueger

John was born August 12, 1947. He was born and raised in Richmond, VA. He started working at West End Machine and Welding in 1966. Mr. Rueger became owner of the business in 1972. He was a long term member of the Richmond Ski Club. He is a member of Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance (SAARA). He has over 2 years of successful recovery. He resides in the West End of Richmond with his wife Kathy. John has four children.

Charles "Chick" Jordan

A native of Virginia Beach, Mr. Jordan graduated from the University of Virginia in 1973. He has worked in the hotel, restaurant, and catering business for the last thirty years. Mr. Jordan has been active in the industry association. He has served on the Board of Directors for twenty years and was president of the Virginia Restaurant Association twice and the chairman of the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association in 2000. Since 1988 he has owned his catering business Catercorp in Hanover County and The Marquee Event Hall in Richmond. He is an active member of Second Baptist Church with his wife Elaine, and there three sons.

Biography of Henry F. Bulifant IV

Henry Bulifant is owner of H.F. Bulifant & Sons, Inc., Bulifant Construction Corp., Bulifant Properties, Inc., and The Next Step, Inc. . H.F. Bulifant and Sons, Inc. is a construction company that specializes in diasaster repairs, i.e: fire, smoke and water damage repairs. Bulifant Properties, Inc. is a family real estate holding and property management company. Bulifant Construction Corp. is a real estate maintenance and land scapping company. And, The Next Step, Inc. manages recovery houses for men and women in recovery for alcoholism and drug addiction.

Henry was born on August 17, 1950 in Richmond, Va. He has spent most of life in the Richmond area. He attended Huguenot High School and graduated in 1968. During high school he worked part time jobs while school was in session and during the summers he would always work in the construction trades. After high school he joined the U.S. Air Force and served from 1968 to 1972 as a crew chief on the C-130 B & E model aircraft. He served 2 of his 4 years overseas and Honorably discharged.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he attended John Tyler Community College and graduated in 1974 with Honors and received an Associate in Arts and Associate in Science Degrees. While at JTCC he worked in the library while classes where in session and in the summers worked in the trades. Upon graduation he transferred to the College of William and Mary. He graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree. While attending William and Mary he worked in the library during class semesters and during the summers he worked with the professors performing land use determination studies.

After College he worked for NASA in Newport News at the wind tunnel facility. The wind tunnel facility generate the environment to test wing designs on various experimental aircraft. After returning to Richmond he went to work for Bremmer Youngblood and King, a consulting engineering firm that specialized in land use development.

In August of 1977, he started H.F. Bulifant & Sons, Inc. . In 1978 Bulifant Construction Corp was established and The Next Step, Inc. was established in 1991. Bulifant Properties, Inc. was formally established in 2004.

During his years in business he has been active and served on various committees in the Richmond Metro Chamber, VAMA, The Blue Goose, Richmond Home Builders Association, The Remodelors Council, The Restoration Committee, Retail Merchants Association, PDCA, Better Business Bureau, Richmond Claims Association and the JTCC Foundation Board.

He is married and has 2 sons and 4 dogs. His areas of interest and hobbies are: skiing, golf, stamp collecting, gemology, computer technology, and quality time with his family. His areas of philanthropy are: Sgt. Santa, ESI, Church, The Next Step, American Red Cross, Salvation Army and The United Way.

David Dunston

Born October 13, 1955 in Richmond, Virginia. Graduated from Hermitage High School in 1973. Employed with the Motor Carrier Division of the State Corporation Commission from June of 1973 until July of 1995 when the Motor Carrier functions were transferred to DMV. Currently serves as Case Manager at DMV. Was introduced to the McShin Foundation in 2005 when serving as chairman of the Building & Grounds committee at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church were McShin facilities are now located. Serves as liaison between McShin and its faith based partner, Hatcher Church. Personal interests including motorcycling and woodworking.

James "Jimmy" L. Brooks, Board of Directors

James "Jimmy" L. Brooks

Mr. Brooks has been in successful long term recovery since September 17, 1985. He is the father of two children, Jim Jr. ,26, and Morgan Cheyene, 12. Mr. Brooks is a 1995 Cum Laude graduate of J. Sargeant Reynolds, where he recieved an AAS in Horticulture. Jimmy says: ” I would not trade my journey for anything. I truly believe in what I am doing for my recovery and the McShin Foundation!!”
